Woodhouse is largely a residential area, slightly north of Leeds city centre. It’s home to the University of Leeds and its proximity to the downtown area makes it a strategic place both for students and workers. The first evidence of the name Woodhouse is from around the 1170s and derives from the Old English version of wood and house. In 1853, it was described as a large and handsome village.
Originally, the Woodhouse area of Leeds extended in a wide horseshoe arc traveling north from Burley Road. During World War II, this suburb was hit by an aerial bombing from the German Luftwaffe which resulted in the destruction of several buildings and three civilians killed. Woodhouse has undergone extensive development becoming a thriving area that prompted a large and diverse population to move in the suburb.
Location
This suburb of Leeds is just north of the city and it borders with Hyde Park and Headingly to the northwest, Harehills to the east, Meanwood and Chapel Allerton to the north. Woodhouse is just 5 minute walk from the city campuses of Leeds University and Leeds Becket University.
Area Transportation
Woodhouse’s location is enough to guarantee great connections. There are many bus lines that connect this area to Leeds city centre: lines 49, 50 / 50A and 19 / 19A connect the Burley Road area near Leeds City College to the downtown area. The ride takes around five minutes. Commuters can take lines 1, 6, 28 and 56 from the Woodhouse Moor area to get to the centre of Leeds and to Headingley/Hyde Park.
Woodhouse is also well connected by train: Leeds Rail Station is about a km and a half away from the northern part of Woodhouse and, as such, is the closest to the area. Trains to London King’s Cross take around two and a half hours, with Sheffield, Manchester, York and Hull all being within an hour away. Driving is another option if one wants to move from this district of Leeds to the city centre thanks to the M62, M6 and M1 some of the most important motorways which are within easy reach of Woodhouse. For those who prefer traveling by air, the closest airport to Woodhouse is the Leeds Bradford Airport, approximately 11 km north west from the suburb.

Eldon is one of the best pubs in Woodhouse. Located in 190 Woodhouse Lane, it is popular with students but it still counts with local regulars. Places to visit within a radius of 50 km
There are many places that tourists can visit in a radius of 50 km from Woodhouse. One of the most popular attractions is Cannon Hall Farm in Barnsley, 36 km south of Woodhouse. It is visited by almost a quarter of a million people every year. It features a big playground for children, a climbing forest, falconry, sheepdog displays, etc. The farm was granted permission for further developments in the future.
Rodley Nature Reserve is closer to Woodhouse, at around 9 km north west from the suburb. It is a nice place to spend a day out with friends, families and children. It is a wetland reserve, an excellent habitat for birds and other animal species. Frogs, toads and newts breed in the reserve. Over 15 species of dragonflies have been recorded in this reserve. It is on a migratory route used by waders and waterfowl. The facilities are a carpark by the gate and a visitor centre.
Harewood House is a nice area where history and nature meet. It is 15 km north of Woodhouse and it was built in the 18th century. It is one of England’s treasure houses and it features an art collection, amazing gardens, a playground, and a bird garden, Harewood House hosts events and activities throughout the year.
Brodsworth Hall and Gardens is 50 km south east of Woodhouse. Here visitors can experience firsthand what it was like to live in the Victorian times. It was built in the 1860s and its rooms are very interesting to explore. Tourists can enjoy a cup of tea at Brodsworth Hall’s tearoom and the gardens are definitely worth a visit. There is also a play area available for children.
Horsforth Village Museum is around 8 km north west of Woodhouse. It is another historic attraction because visitors will have an insight to the heritage of the village of Horsforth through a display of exhibitions which give an idea of life during those days. It was once described as the biggest village in England and somehow, it still retains a village identity despite the proximity with the industrial Leeds.
RHS Garden Harlow Carr is 26 km north of Woodhouse. It is one of the five public gardens run by the Royal Horticultural Society. At these gardens, visitors will find plenty of amenities and activities to do: RHS Garden Harlow Carr feature a winter walk, kitchen garden, an arboretum, a winter garden, scented garden, and foliage garden, annual and perennial displays, a beautiful alpine house, a learning centre, a library, and much more.
